The Gateway to the Sunshine Coast
Nanaga
Nanaga isn’t a town, but rather a famous farm stall and crossroads that has become a landmark stop for travelers. Situated at the junction of the N2 and R72 highways, Nanaga Farm Stall is the gateway to the Sunshine Coast if you’re coming from Port Elizabeth’s (Quebeca) direction. Surrounded by rolling dairy farms and pineapple fields, Nanaga is the perfect first (or last) stop on your journey to stock up on local goodies.
What to Do
Indulge in padkos (road-trip food)! Stretch your legs in the gardens and chat with the friendly staff inside the farm stall – they might tell you about the history of the place (Nanaga has been around for decades) or point you to the old photographs on the wall showing how the intersection looked in days gone by. Legend has it, that the name “Nanaga” comes from a Xhosa word meaning “place of many adders,” referencing snakes seen by early travellers. Don’t worry – you’re unlikely to meet any now, except the carved wooden ones sold as souvenirs!
Where to Eat
The Nanaga Farm Stall is legendary. You absolutely must try:
- Nanaga Pies: Renowned as possibly the best pies in South Africa. These flaky, golden pies come with a variety of fillings and are baked fresh daily. You’ll often see a queue of hungry travellers just for these. Grab one (or a half-dozen) and maybe a spare to reheat later – they are that good.
- Roosterkoek: Another speciality, these are traditional fire-grilled breads. Enjoy them warm with butter and locally made jam or cheese.
- Fresh Pineapple Juice: Given the surrounding pineapple farms, it’s no surprise Nanaga stocks up ultra-fresh pineapple juice prepared by their neighbour, the Oakley Farm Stall.
